Winchester (determined by PR dates) first began using the superposed “WP” Winchester Definitive proof mark in Might 1905, and continued to use it on most models from that point on. In my surveys, I have verified that date for the Product 1885, Product 1894, and Design 1897, and I believe that Michael has verified the exact same about the Design 1892. Ned Schwing stated in his reference book to the Model 1890 & 1906 that Winchester commenced evidence marking them in 1908… I have no idea if that may be accurate, but will assume that it is. The “WP” evidence mark was applied after the barrel and receiver were mated, assembled and concluded. This is very apparent to the firearms produced within the late teens by means of early 30s once the blue flaked (popped) off if the evidence was struck to the receiver body.
